Following a few more closing remarks from Allison, students were dismissed but not before picking up their new RHA shirts! With one more Welcome Reception down in the books, the RHA team looked forward to executing a successful Leadership Training Day for the newly elected students, which was only one week away.
The incoming 2015 - 2016 Residence Hall Association Class had been officially elected, and complete elections could only mean one thing -- Welcome Reception! Home to both first year and fourth year RHA members, Welcome Reception brings, for many, the very first step in a long career with the Residence Hall Association! The Executive Team and Senators at Large had been preparing for weeks for the arrival of dozens of newly elected students, and were setting up tables an hour and a half before the 6:30pm start time of reception. The first few students trickled in around 6:00, and entire councils quickly followed, marking the beginning of a fantastic experience for many students! After checking in, students were welcomed with a large assortment of dinner options, both vegetarian and vegan friendly, and proceeded to get to know one another at their respective dining council tables. After a few opening remarks from RHA President Allison Peters, students were treated to a short film created on behalf of the executive team, a mockumentary of RHA based off of (and yes, filmed in) The Office. Afterwards, students listened to the insightful remarks of RHA Co-Advisors Tracy Kiras and Steve Petkas, in addition to a general rundown of RHA Senate from Vice President Ashley Feng. Students then got to experience their personal learning styles through an activity where they were instructed to "design their own leader", drawing their combined council leader on the poster-paper provided. Responses were unique, as students shared their reflective masterpieces, ranging from ambitious turtle (leaders), to artistic big-eared listeners, and a wide range of other important qualities. Following a few more closing remarks from Allison, students were dismissed but not before picking up their new RHA shirts! With one more Welcome Reception down in the books, the RHA team looked forward to executing a successful Leadership Training Day for the newly elected students, which was only one week away.

Disappointed after last week's rainout (and blowout), the Residence Hall Association was excited to get back out on the turf on LaPlata beach! The crew was once again ready by 10:00am, and was quickly handing out emoji T-Shirts to excited students who couldn't wait for the tailgate to begin. This week's tailgate featured an appearance from many of the UMDs Cheerleading Squad, in addition to an appearance from the one and only (turtle) Testudo himself! Cornhole and impromptu games of two-on-two football were widely popular, with hundreds of students once again enjoying the free amenities which including face-painting, sign-making and tattoos! Perhaps it was only fitting that Maryland did indeed beat USF, 35-17 to cap a fantastic Terp Up!
The RHA team was back out and at it again this past Tuesday at their annual Open House! The Open House, which took place in the Cambridge Community Center, is an opportunity for students who are interested in joining RHA to learn more about the organization. The incumbent executive board addressed questions regarding Senate logistics, Hall Council and Community Development, and roles of various other positions within RHA. The twenty-something turnout was a significant increase from the year before, and President Allison Peters attributed the success to the logistical set-up of this year's Open House, which allowed for students to come and go as they pleased, making the experience more enjoyable for the students. The Residence Hall Association, in conjunction with the Department of Residence Life headed out to LaPlata beach this past Saturday to Terp Up for Gameday! From 10am - 12pm, or two hours before every kickoff, the two organizations host this event in an attempt to provide students with an authentic tailgating experience on campus. New to this year's tailgates was the addition of Radio Station Hot 99.5, equipped with a full DJ Set, which was a hit for students from across the DMV region. Additionally, students were able to create favorite signs, sport maryland eye-tattoos, adopt colorful hairstyles via hairspray, and receive limited-edition emoji T-Shirts. Over 300 students were estimated to have come to the first tailgate, setting high expectations for the rest of the season!
The Residence Hall Association welcomed over 5,000 incoming freshmen to the University of Maryland last Saturday night. Returning members of RHA arrived to Byrd Stadium over two and a half hours before "kickoff" to assist in the enormous set-up operation of Welcome to the B1G Show. The 2015 - 2016 RHA President, Allison Peters led the program, along with student athlete Nick Pulli, both cracking jokes while putting in plugs for their respective organizations. The speeches were generally well received among the incoming Class of 2019, and at the conclusion of the event, RHA members were approached by many students whom were both eager to learn more and also excited to receive their new RHA swag. What a way to kickoff the new year RHA! This past week, the North Hall Area Council celebrated the very anticipated April 20th date with a Pot Party! Residents were allowed to adopt their very own plants, and even paint pots during the event. Junior Zach Boyles, a veteran member of RHA said that "this was definitely not what I was expecting, but I ended up having a fantastic time!" Students from many different communities rushed across the street in front of Carroll Hall to see what all the fuss was about, and most sounded like they had a fantastic time! In perhaps one of the most anticipated events yet this year, Denton Hall hosted Greenfest in front the Denton Community this past weekend! The turnout was more than they had anticipated, with over 300 students attending during the 3-hour event! There were representatives from over a dozen organizations on campus, many of which were encouraging sustainable and green habits. Students were able to adopt a plant, taste new organic food products, and even pet sustainable green -- yes green -- dogs! Definitely an event for the books, or should we say, garden!
It was LaPlata Hall's first event back from Spring Break, and it sure went off without a hitch! Members from RHA spent the previous night baking delicious goods such as brownies and chocolate chip cookies for their residents! Students were surprised when they walked out of the elevators and directly into tables filled with tasty treats -- and for free! Dana Rodriguez, a freshman and Finance major, said that "these cookies were the best thing I've had since Christmas!" Similarly, dozens of other students were taken aback by the tasty treats, but nearly all of them agreed that RHA was definitely looking out for them! |
